The general rule
In England, paving a front garden over five square metres usually does not need planning permission if the surface is permeable, or if rainwater runs to a lawn or border within your property. A solid surface draining onto the road usually does need permission. Check the current rules on the Planning Portal or with South Norfolk Council.
Other things to check
- A dropped kerb needs separate permission from the highways authority
- Conservation areas and listed buildings can have extra rules, including parts of central Wymondham
- Trees and roots near the drive
How drainage is planned
The installer should look at levels and where water goes now, then plan the base and edges so water soaks through or runs to a suitable area. This page is general guidance, not legal advice.
